Who’s going to Brainerd next week?

I am.

I don’t know why. The last time I took an advanced rider’s course, a big girl scared me and I fell down.

My husband (RC51) and his BFF (some super KTM) are doing a track day, intermediate level. I was going to do a quick track orientation session for fifty bucks, but no. I’m taking the full day class. Luckily a friend is teaching and another friend is attending. I really need to get over fixating and staying on the throttle coming into turns. I’ll be on the 91 Hawk instead of the Duc, which really makes no sense since the Duc is already battered enough, but I can’t seem to muscle the steering as easily as I can on the Hawk. Plus, people might feel sorry for me and not pass me if I only have 50 HP. Hmmm, maybe I’ll bring the Duc for backup.

Hopefully we’ll have a whole new front end by Sunday: brand new CBR forks (thank you, DA!), clip-ons, new rim and brake and just waiting for a master cyclinder and some Water Wetter, Whatever that is.

This is about the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard about motorcycles and riding.

I’m standing in line at the bank. I’m wearing a leather racing jacket and holding a full face helmet. A man and a loan officer walk up to one of the teller windows. Seeing me, the woman says to her client, “Well I certainly hope YOU wear a helmet.”

The guy, wearing some Harley logo stuff, says loudly, “No way. Helmets make crashes worse. It’s been proven. They’re so heavy they make your head hit the pavement, no matter how you fall. I’ve fallen three times and haven’t hurt my head yet.”

As she passed me on the way back to her desk she said, “I’m glad you’re wearing one.”

To which I replied, “I also make a point of not falling down.”

Ha ha ha.

Seriously, where does that shit come from?

How has he never seen a motorcycle race? MotoGP riders crash at 150+ MPH on a pretty regular basis. Not one has ridden bareback, or bare-headed. It’s a pretty well-engineered sport so I think there’d be ample evidence for the theory that your head would float above your body as it slid along the pavement into a guardrail.

I can still lay down on my tank and tilt my head all the way back, looking through the top of my eyes if want to.

So far, this might be the best comment I’ve seen on this “accessory” making the rounds on the bike lists.

1. The guy designed it to keep out the rain. He lives in BAJA, CALIFORNIA. Average rainfall? Minus 1.0 inches?

2. Baja. Well known for dirt bike riding, dune buggies and… weed. ‘Nuff said?

My sweetie was cruising along behind Dan and me and saw two bikes for sale in Maiden Rock, Wi. A matched set of Honda HawkGTs also known as the NT650. The price was right and she thought they were cool looking and I lusted after one when they first came out so we bought ‘em. These things are so fun. Look, Flick, Gaaahh. Little, light, low power bikes have their place and it appears for at least two of them it’s our garage when not being thrashed on the alphabet.

I got a new bike (and blog) last month and was wondering if the RC would eat tires as quickly as the Buell did. Now I know, it does in about twelve hundred miles of mixed riding it has gone from an almost new Pirelli Diablo to almost junk. Oops. I’m going to blame it on our friend Dan. He’s really quite the rider and I have to work the throttle pretty hard to actually lead the rides we go on.

For all you who ride D near Pepin and Arkansaw be careful it’s very sandy right now. There is sand at the turn in points, there is sand at the proper apex, there is sand everywhere. My suggestion tippy toe through the first time to check the conditions. On the plus side in Pierce county the roads are much better. CR A is clear as are SS, UU and O.

I bought a Honda RC51 a couple weeks ago and now that it has gotten warm enough to be able to ride without getting frostbite I have a couple things to say….. Oh my God. Some of you may already know I have had a Buell X1 for the last couple years and have loved it. It was responsive, quick, loud and capable of eating rear tires at an astounding rate because I don’t really know how to ride with any kind of civility. The Buell is a reasonably sharp knife as a motorcycle, the RC is a scalpel. I’m not sure if it’s going to eat rear tires like the Buell does yet but it kicks the Buells ass everywhere else. I have never owned a bike that gives this kind of precision in hitting an apex. I’ve been happy with a couple inches either side of my mark. With this bike I can narrow it down to a half inch. It’s gonna be fun to get to know this thing as well as I did the Buell.
