Well, I have to admit I wept when I saw Nicky finish. The look on his face told the whole story. He looked, finally, as fresh and spontaneous and emotional as the Europeans. He was so happy and had come so far. It's that kind of celebration that very few American sports stars share with their fans. NASCAR has a bit of both--the good ol' boys are so unpolished, they give me retard tingles when they talk. But that's not their fault--who gives a crap what a NASCAR driver has to say? "I planned to go fast, so I drove fast and then I saw someone go past me so I went faster, but shoot, I really had to go fast at the end there, so thanks to the Lord, I won it." (That's if you have the subtitles turned on.) NASCAR, like American football, baseball, hockey, basketball, is faceless. Tennis is still about individuals, almost to a fault. And the big guys are all so egotistical--the team play ethos is a thing of the past. I think that's why I like Bret Favre--he reminds me of Nicky in that way. He's a donkey--shows up, does the work, goes home and once in awhile, can't believe his good luck. That's nice. I guess the point is that if you're good enough to have fun and show it, I love it. If Nicky can storm off swearing like a sailor, good for him. If he can run through the paddock with tears in his eyes after a win, then I'll root for him a bit more next year. If he were trying to topple Biaggi--an arrogant, self-important, buttprint--that would be easy! The fact that Rossi jumped ship with Honda because of their management style makes me really respect him and I guess it's that insubordination, or truculence (sp?) or self-esteem that is supposed to be the benchmark for the American spirit and that's what I want to see the most of. Not grandstanding, not spiking the ball, just racing seriously and loving it.

There is no way that anyone in Italy doesn't know who Valentino Rossi is. He is a high-profile national hero. I love his style, he's great for the sport. He's a winner, a true champion, a passionate Italian.

By contrast, not a single US motoGP star has ever even been a blip on the national scene. We are saturated with the world's best entertainment and sports programming. The American sports heroes are consistent, professional, and workman-like. Notice a resemblance to Japanese heroes? That is Nicky Hayden, and that's why Honda wants him back.

I hated watching Doohan bore me at post-race conferences, but I loved watching him race. I don't get NASCAR either, and I love the euro-trash commentary MUCH better. But before we equate American southern accents with stupidity, remember they figured out a few trivial things like metal ships, torpedoes, and submarines.

For truly remarkable stupidity, I give you Pedrosa at Estoril. That's the kind of teammate I want! Did Hayden have enough passion for you there? Let's not forget the stark contrast of teammate support from Edwards, with Texas accent, giving Rossi the chance for maximum points.

Both Rossi and Hayden have had numerous moments of good and bad luck, which makes them even in my book. I like them both, and want a nice battle to the end. Finally someone has stepped up to challenge The Doctor. It's not some passionate Italian (Biaggi) or passionate Spaniard (Gibernau) who crumbles under pressure. It's a boring, consistent American, which is the most dangerous threat Rossi has faced so far. I'd like more of this next year!

I love Valentino Rossi. He has done so much for the sport. His personality, his determination, his celebrations... The fact that he takes on any challenge and never settles for less than the topspot on the podium.

When Nicky Hayden came into the MotoGP I really thought that he would have a great future in MotoGP. He is consistent (most of the time anyway), but he doesn't have that fighting spirit that Valentino Rossi has. He has said so many times at a post-race pressconference that he 'settled' for that position, that he thought about he points, etc.

In my opinion he is only leading the championship because Valentino Rossi has had so many DNF's. If Valentino Rossi would have finished in the points every time instead of having the DNF's, Nicky Hayden would have been 2nd in the championship. But... that is racing!
